উপকূলীয় শহর বেলিজ সিটি দেশের বৃহত্তম শহর ও দেশের বাণিজ্যিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্র। ১৯৭২ সাল পর্যন্ত এটি দেশটির রাজধানী ছিল। ১৯৬১ সালে একটি হারিকেন ঘূর্ণিঝড়ে শহরটির ব্যাপক ক্ষয়ক্ষতি করলে দেশের অভ্যন্তরে বেলিজ সিটি থেকে ৮০ কিলোমিটার পশ্চিমে বেলমোপান শহরে নতুন রাজধানী নির্মাণ করা হয়।

বেলিজ জাতিগত ও সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে বিচিত্র দেশ। এখানকার অনেক লোক কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ কিংবা মিশ্র আফ্রিকান-ইউরোপীয় রক্তের লোক, যাদেরকে ক্রেওল ডাকা হয়। এছাড়াও এখানে বহু মায়া আদিবাসী ও মেস্তিসো (আদিবাসী আমেরিকান ও ইউরোপীয়দের মিশ্র জাতি) লোকের বাস। এছাড়াও এখানে ইউরোপীয় ও এশীয়রা স্বল্প সংখ্যায় বাস করেন। ১৯৭০-এর দশকের পর থেকে কৃষাঙ্গ ও অর্ধ-কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ ক্রেওলদের তুলনায় মেস্তিসোদের অনুপাত বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। মেস্তিসোরা বর্তমানে বেলিজের জনসংখ্যার অর্ধেকেরও বেশি প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে। 

 

বর্তমান বেলিজ এলাকাটি অতীতে মায়া সভ্যতার অংশ ছিল। মায়া সভ্যতা ২০০০ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে বিকাশ লাভ করে এবং ১৫৫০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত স্থায়ী ছিল। মায়ারা ছিল দক্ষ কৃষক; তারা তখনকার যুগের সবচেয়ে অগ্রসর একটি সভ্যতা নির্মাণ করেছিল। তারা অনেক কারুকার্যময় মন্দির নির্মাণ করে। মায়া সভ্যতার প্রাচীন নগরগুলির ধ্বংসাবশেষ দেখতে অনেক পর্যটক এখন বেলিজে বেড়তে আসে। দেশটির প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্য, বন্যপ্রাণীর বৈচিত্র্য ও মনোরম সৈকতগুলিও পর্যটকদেরকে আকৃষ্ট করে।

বেলিজ প্রায় দুই শতক ধরে ব্রিটেনের উপনিবেশ ছিল। এটি আমেরিকা মহাদেশের মূল ভূখণ্ডে অবস্থিত সর্বশেষ ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশ ছিল। ১৯৭৩ পর্যন্ত এর নাম ছিল ব্রিটিশ হন্ডুরাস। প্রতিবেশী রাষ্ট্র গুয়াতেমালা ঐতিহাসিক কারণে বেলিজকে নিজের অংশ বলে দাবী করে আসলেও বেলিজ নিজের স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রচারণা চালায়। ১৯৮১ সালের ২১শে সেপ্টেম্বর এটি স্বাধীনতা অর্জন করে। বর্তমানে এটি কমনওয়েলথ অফ নেশনসের একটি সদস্য হিসেবে যুক্তরাজ্যের সাথে সম্পর্ক জিইয়ে রেখেছে। বেলিজের প্রধান ভাষা ইংরেজি। বেলিজের সরকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান ও সরকারী ভাষা তাই ইংরেজি ভাষাভাষী ব্রিটিশ ক্যারিবীয় দ্বীপগুলির মত। কিন্তু এর সংস্কৃতি আবার মধ্য আমেরিকার অন্যান্য দেশগুলির মত। বেলিজের রাজনৈতিক ব্যবস্থাটি মধ্য আমেরিকার দেশগুলির মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি স্থিতিশীল ও গণতান্ত্রিক। 

 

১৬৩৮ সালে পিটার ওয়ালেস নামের একজন স্কটল্যান্ডীয় জলদস্যু বেলিজ নদীর মোহনাতে একটি লোকালয় স্থাপন করেন বলে ধারণা করা হয়। ওয়ালেসের নামের স্পেনীয় উচ্চারণ থেকেই "বেলিজ" নামটি এসেছে বলে অনুমান করা হয়। আরেকটি তত্ত্ব অনুযায়ী মায়া ভাষার শব্দ বেলিক্স থেকে এসেছে যার অর্থ "কাদাপানি" অথবা অন্য আরেকটি মায়া শব্দ বেলিকিন থেকে এসেছে যার অর্থ "সমুদ্রমুখী দেশ"।

বেলিজের অর্থনীতি মুক্তবাজার প্রকৃতির। ২০শ শতকের প্রথমার্ধ পর্যন্ত কাঠ রপ্তানি ছিল এর অর্থনীতির মেরুদণ্ড। বর্তমানে চিনি ও লেবু জাতীয় ফল রপ্তানি দেশটির আয়ের প্রধান উৎস। বর্তমানে সেবাখাত দেশটির বৃহত্তম অর্থনৈতিক খাত। এছাড়া পর্যটন বিদেশী আয়ের অন্যতম একটি উৎস। বেলিজের মুদ্রার নাম বেলিজ ডলার।

 

শহরের উত্তরে মেক্সিকো, পশ্চিমে ও দক্ষিণে গুয়াতেমালা এবং পূর্বে ক্যারিবীয় সাগর। বেলিজ দেশটির তটরেখার দৈর্ঘ্য ২৮০ কিলোমিটার। উপকূল থেকে ৩০ কিলোমিটার দূরত্বে সমুদ্রের মধ্যে একটি প্রবাল বাধ আছে, যার নাম বেলিজ প্রবাল বাধ। বেলিজের পর্যটকদের জন্য ছোট একটি দর্শনীয় স্থান বেলিজের এমন সকল স্থানগুলো। বেলিজের প্রাকৃতিক দৃশ্যই মূলত পর্যটকদের অনেক বেশি আকর্ষন করে।

বেলিজের দক্ষিণ অংশটিতে একটি সরু উপকূলীয় সমভূমি আছে, যার পাশে হঠাৎ অনেক উঁচু পাহাড় ও পর্বত উঠে গেছে; পার্বত্য অঞ্চলটির নাম মায়া পর্বতমালা। দেশের তিন-চতুর্থাংশ এলাকা অরণ্যে আবৃত। আর এই সকল দৃশ্যগুলোও বেলিজের পর্যটকদের জন্য অনন্য একটি আকর্ষন। সারা বিশ্বের কাছে পরিচিত এই বর্তমান বেলিজ এলাকাটি অতীতে মায়া সভ্যতার অংশ ছিল। মায়ারা ছিল দক্ষ কৃষক, তারা তখনকার যুগের সবচেয়ে অগ্রসর একটি সভ্যতা নির্মাণ করেছিল। তাদের হাতের যেকোনো কাজ ঐ ছিল আকর্ষনীয় এবং অনেক সূক্ষ। তাই তাদের দ্বারা তখন অনেক অপরুপ নিদর্শন তৈরী হয়েছিল যেগুলো এখন শুধু স্মৃতি এবং দর্শনীয় বিষয়বস্তু। তারা অনেক কারুকার্যময় মন্দির নির্মাণ করে।

With its plentiful outdoor activities, this 25-mile-long island off the coast of northern Belize caters to the snorkeling and diving set. The island was originally inhabited by the Mayans to serve as a far-extending trade route, spanning from present-day Mexico to as far south as Honduras. Today, Ambergris Caye welcomes thousands of visitors seeking easy access to the barrier reef that surrounds the island. 

Snorkelers and intrepid divers alike will want to explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Most of the diving and snorkeling shops and instructors are found in San Pedro, including the Belize Pro Dive Center, Tuff E Nuff Tours and Scuba School Belize, which all offer a variety of daily excursions. Prices vary depending on the type and length of tours, plus any certification fees for diving.

When you're not underwater, explore San Pedro, Ambergris' main town. Here you'll find beachside restaurants, lounges, shops and luxury hotels. Great Blue Hole

Mystery Tracks Discovered at Bottom of Belize's Great Blue Hole.

The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It has a surface area of 70,650 square metres (760,500 sq ft).

 It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Great Blue Hole is a popular spot among recreational scuba divers who are lured by the opportunity to dive in sometimes crystal-clear water and meet several species of fish, including midnight parrotfish, Caribbean reef shark, and other juvenile fish species. Other species of shark, such as the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there but are not regularly sighted. Usually, day trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips from the coastal tourist communities in Belize.

On-shore caves of similar formation, as large collapsed sinkholes, are well known in Belize and in the Yucatán Peninsula, where they are known as cenotes. Unlike the mainland cenotes which often link to underwater cave systems, there is little evidence of horizontal development in the Blue Hole.

In 2012, Discovery Channel ranked the Great Blue Hole as number one on its list of "The 10 Most Amazing Places on Earth". In 2018, they featured a two-hour special titled Discovery Live: Into the Blue Hole featuring Erika Bergman, Fabien Cousteau and Richard Branson.

The site was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the top five scuba diving sites in the world. In 1971 he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths. Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole's origin as typical karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 21 m (69 ft), 49 m (161 ft), and 91 m (299 ft). Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level.

 Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 5˚ in a consistent orientation, indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane. The tilt indicates that this was a movement of the land, rather than a rise in sea level alone. Initial measured depth of Great Blue Hole was about 125 m (410 ft) which is the most often cited depth up to this day.

An expedition was conducted in the summer of 1997 to collect core samples from the Blue Hole's floor and document the cave system.[5] To accomplish these tasks, all of the divers had to be certified in cave diving and mixed gases.

In December 2018, two submarines descended into the Blue Hole in an attempt to map its interior. Using sonar scanning, the team was nearly able to complete a 3-D map of the 1,000 foot wide hole. One of their discoveries was a layer of hydrogen sulfide at a depth of approximately 300 feet (91 m). The water at that depth and below becomes dark, anoxic and devoid of life. The submarine expedition also discovered the bodies of two divers at the bottom, out of three believed to have gone missing while diving there.

Aero Mexico has announced new seasonal non-stop flights to .Belize effective November 17, 2018. The new route is expected to run on weekends from November 17, 2018 to April 28, 2019. 

The flight isscheduled to depart Belize City at 12:00 noon and arrive in Mexico by 2:25 p.m. – just in time forafternoon siesta and enough time to get in a city tour and a dinner show. With Belize becoming AeroMexico’s 50 th international destination, a gateway will now be open to more than 40 destinations inMexico and over 45 international destinations.

Just in case you’re interested in taking another route to the jewel, Sun Country Airlines is now offering

non-stop weekly flights on Saturdays from Minnesota, USA to Belize City starting December 22, 2018.

This new route makes Minnesota the 10 th US airport to have direct flights to Belize City.

The Director of Tourism for the Belize Tourism Board, Mrs. Karen Bevans, elaborated that the new arrangement with AeroMexico will “highly facilitate the movement of people between both neighbouring countries”, and that “the BTB is dedicated to developing and implementing tourism programs that will help strengthen and grow the Belizean tourism industry; promote good destination

stewardship, and instill high-quality standards for accommodations.”

Ms. Bevans also stated that the additional flights with Sun Country “marks Belize’s farthest reach into the Upper Midwest — an area of the U.S. that can really benefit from easy access to a tropical Belizeanvacation when winter comes”.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has recently come up with its “Safe Travels Protocols” in an attempt to address the challenges of travel during the pandemic.

By granting its “Safe Travels” Stamp, it assists tourists in deciding which locations are considered safe. The stamp recognizes that these countries have put in place health and safety procedures that resist the spread of Covid-19.

It was therefore with great delight that Hon. Anthony Mahler, Belize’s Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, reacted to Belize being granted the “Safe Travels” Stamp in December of 2020.

He stated that “Belize is delighted to have received the World Travel Tourism Council’s Stamp of Approval. The WTTC’s Stamp of Approval is a milestone achievement for Belize, and is truly a strong testament of Belize’s unwavering commitment to an environment that is safe, secure, and provides an authentic and meaningful experience to our visitors!”
